In 2010, a vibrant movement emerged in Saint Joseph, Missouri, giving birth to Tuningfork—a project designed to spotlight local bands and embrace the rich musical landscape of the region. What began as a simple showcase on the local ABC affiliate, KQ2, quickly evolved into a cherished platform for both musicians and music enthusiasts.
The initiative was driven by drummer Tim Parker and a dedicated group of creatives, including bassist Kiley Bodenhamer, a key collaborator, and Blurt Magazines Danny R. Phillips, who conducted engaging interviews that brought the stories of local artists to life. The team explored downtown Saint Joe, transforming familiar locales into a bustling scene, complete with yellow taxi cabs and lively discussions on the patios of neighborhood pubs. This artistic endeavor not only showcased the talent of Saint Joe’s musicians but also painted the city as a thriving cultural hub.
As Tuningfork gained popularity, it expanded its reach by launching a website crafted by another local musician, Brett Yeager. This digital platform became a vital space for fans and artists, fostering connections within the community. The enthusiasm for local music resonated deeply, leading the team to make a significant leap: they started producing a physical magazine. With guitarist Cory Amen providing striking cover photography and cool graphics and design by the Rumblejets drummer Jud Kite, the magazine captured the essence of the local music scene, pairing stunning imagery with the narratives of the artists.
By 2018, Tuningfork had blossomed into a beloved resource, reaching audiences not only in Saint Joe but also in Kansas City and Lawrence, KS. The magazine became an essential outlet for promoting local musicians, supporting small businesses, and showcasing the hard work of contributors who shared a passion for music. The spirit of collaboration and community was vibrant, creating a dynamic network fueled by creativity and enthusiasm.
However, like many ventures, Tuningfork faced significant hurdles due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The crisis brought live music to a standstill and halted the gatherings that were integral to the magazine’s spirit. Despite these challenges, the essence of Tuningfork persisted. The bonds formed over the years, the memories of electrifying performances, and the camaraderie among contributors remained strong.
